With an ever increasing amount of rubbish and litter accumulating around the Borough Road corridor and having heard a number of neighbours complaining or expressing safety concerns, Birkenhead YMCA decided to respond and set up a community clean-up day.
A group of residents and staff got together and thanks to help from local business Major Skip Hire, they set to with litter pickers, cutters and brushes and cleared a large area of land, filling the skip to the brim.
Local residents were delighted with the result – "The kids can play out here now and not have to wade through all that rubbish".
Margaret Andrews of Shaw Street thanked everyone for taking part and said how pleased she was with the transformation of the grassed area adjacent to Shaw Street.
Commenting on the success of the day Birkenhead YMCA Chief Executive, Nigel Hughes said "This type of initiative enables our service users to do something really positive for the local community and they get a lot of personal satisfaction from taking part, it also gives a sense of community spirit, which is vitally important".
